Here you see quite a lot of samples from my work for Roger Rabbit, Mulan, Tarzan, Kingdom In The Sun, Treasure Planet, Brother Bear, Fraidy Cat, The Snowqueen, Rex Havoc, Enchanted, Kwak, and Space Chimps and some others. Highlights from 21 years in the Animation Industry. Can't show you the recent stuff though, sorry. Still hope you like.H.
holy crap! what a long and amazing post. thanks for sharing. how many designs do you do a day when doing stuff for feature? like say when you were working on brother bear.
Absolutely beautiful stuff! I'm working on a character design portfolio myself at the moment and I gotta say, your work is not only inspiring, but very humbling too. You've set me a pretty damn high bar to aim for, sir.
Terrific work, Harald, as always. I'm struck by the first group image, and in particular the cat and the creature at the center top. They show influence from similar stylings Rik Maki did for Fraidy Cat and elsewhere, as does a later cat and insect creature further down the page. Do you feel Rik had an influence on you in the time you worked with him at Disney?
That cat was done for Fraidy Cat indeedl, but from home in Hamburg, never worked on a team of visdev-people on that one. I was working with Hans Bacher and Piet Kroon very early on in the project, and Hans had asked me to work very loose and Steadman-like, very illustrative. You would be able to see a chronology of getting more loose and weird on the cat if you'd watch them one drawing after the other, also changing the color to blue was part of that process. Of course FC never came to be. But I fell in love with the style and used it on the mosquito for a commercial in Germany ( never happend as well ). I know Rik of course and adore his work, but we never worked on what you could call a team. Hope this answeres it.H
...this doesn't mean, that I wasn't impressed by his art and style, great guy, great artist, though I never saw his work for FC, that's what I wanted to say.
I feel like I hit the awesome-character-design jackpot here! GREAT stuff! Thanks so much for sharing. These are really inspirational and they make me so happy. It is really cool to see all that goes into these great projects.

All great work! I like the softer look of your Tarzan designs that seemed to have been made more pointed and angular in the finished film.

Great jobs!!
My computer just exploded. A-MAZING.
Those Tarzan sketches are amazing. Moreso because their raw feeling actually translated to the film.
